Sleep Quality and Lifestyle in Modern Bulgaria

May 15, 2024 · Dr. Uliana Shestakova

The study examines how lifestyle habits affect sleep quality among people in Bulgaria. Presented by The Sleep Traveler.

In today's world, dominated by technology and a fast-paced lifestyle, sleep quality is becoming an increasingly important indicator of overall well-being. In Bulgaria, this issue is particularly relevant, with more and more research pointing to a direct link between daily habits and nighttime rest.

Screen Time and Falling Asleep

One of the most noticeable influences comes from the excessive use of digital devices before sleep. The blue light emitted by screens suppresses the production of melatonin – the hormone responsible for regulating the sleep-wake cycle. On average, Bulgarians spend over 2 hours in front of a screen in the last 60 minutes before going to bed, which significantly delays falling asleep and reduces sleep depth.

Work Schedules and Travel

Non-standard work shifts, as well as frequent travel with time zone changes, disrupt the body's circadian rhythm. This is particularly characteristic of people working in sectors such as IT, logistics, and tourism. A disrupted rhythm leads to chronic fatigue, reduced concentration, and increased stress.

Expert Insights

Sleep specialists in the country emphasize the importance of consciously creating an evening routine. Recommendations include creating a dark and quiet bedroom, regular physical activity during the day but avoiding intense exercise in the evening, as well as limiting caffeine and heavy food in the late hours.

The analysis shows that small but consistent changes in daily life can lead to a significant improvement in sleep quality and, consequently, in overall health and productivity.
